Happy Hot Cakes!
I have read and enjoyed all of the previous Hot Cakes books and am quite sad to see the series end with Ollie and Piperās story. But with that end, we also finally get to see Piper and Ollie get the happily ever after thatās been teased throughout many of the previous stories. This book probably does stand alone but you really get the whole affect and backstories of the friends if youāve read the whole Hot Cakes series.
Almost from the first page, this book took a different turn than I was expecting. It was believable due to Piper and Ollieās long relationship but it threw both me (and Ollie) for a complete loop. From there, thereās a lot of introspection and back-and-forth as our couple dance around each other and what they may – or may not – feel for each other. It was simple yet cleverly done.
Piper is my kind of girl and the kind of person that I want to be. She loves the 50s pinup vibe and has curves for days. But she also rocks the jeans and t-shirts get-up – much to Ollieās annoyance! Sheās also super organised and shows her love by managing and organising projects and people in her life. Simply, any girl who loves sticky notes as much as I do, has my full support!
Ollie was a bit more of a mystery to me. In previous books I had him pegged as an adorable geek. To some extent he is that – but he also prefers his custom suits and is big and buff. And heās not so much a geek as a flighty dreamer. I felt sorry for him a lot of the time as he felt misunderstood. And yet I was also annoyed at him sometimes. He was a quandary to me – I just wasnāt sure how to take him.
Strangely, that also made him feel a little a-sexual to me. The sex scenes were there and were hot – literally, when the sāmores were added in – but there was something niggling at the back of my head that Ollie wasnāt really into sex. Not necessarily the authorās fault – thatās just where my head went with what Iād learnt about Ollie.
Our couples from the previous books do appear in this book – mostly the guys but all the girls, too at some point. Itās always fun to see the banter from the friend group even if it was tinged with a bit of sadness as Ollie was feeling the odd man out.
The writing – as always with Erin Nicholas – is top notch. It really sucks you in and once again I was in Appleby with friends. There were a few too many āoff ofsā for my British sensibilities and even an āaddictingā – but I didnāt let that affect my rating as I very much enjoyed going back to see the Hot Cakes crew again.
When we got there, I adored the ending of this book. It was everything I needed, delivered in a way that was both believable and idealistically perfect. It left me with a big smile on my face and a skip in my heart. I know that Ollie is the last of the 5 friends and everyoneās now paired upā¦but if Ms Nicholas was inclined to extend the series by giving Drew Fucking Ryan his own story – I wouldnāt be mad at all. 4 stars from me and an enjoyable and fun end to the series.
