Review: Hollywood Games by Evie Alexander

Brace yourself Scotland, Hollywood’s coming…

Rory’s found the love of his life but can he be sure Zoe feels the same? What can he offer her when his job’s on the line, and his mother’s out to destroy her? When Hollywood superstar, Brad Bauer, shows up wanting to film Braveheart 2 at Kinloch castle, it seems like the answer to all his prayers. However, there’s a catch.

Zoe’s had a crush on Brad since she was a teen. Now he’s here, hotter than ever, and convinced he was married to her in a past life. As Hollywood descends on the tiny village of Kinloch, it’s not just the castle that’s under siege.

A mystical holy man, a sexy starlet, an intense megastar and a couple pushed to the edge. Can Rory navigate the glitter storm and keep his eye on the prize, or by saving the estate, is he about to lose the best thing that’s ever happened to him?

When Hollywood meets the Highlands, things will never be the same again….

Wonderfully ridiculous and sexy

This is a bit of an odd one as far as romances go in so much as Rory and Zoe start the book together, end the book together and almost inexplicably manage to stay together throughout the book. With that said, this was an enjoyable romp of a read – managing to be both wonderfully ridiculous and deliciously sexy.

Does is stand alone? It’s hard to say as I have read (and very much enjoyed) Zoe and Rory’s original story/romance, Highland Games – which ends with an HEA. It probably does stand alone, but I think after reading this, you’ll want to go back and read Highland Games – so you might as well go and read that one first and then read this one.

There’s something about reading of a couple who are already together, already madly in love with each other but still at that stage where they’re a wee bit unsure and a teeny tiny bit jealous. Rory is so delightfully besotted with Zoe and wants to be with her, protect her, love her and, erm, have relations with her – at every single minute of every single day. I adore a big, gruff man who is led by his heart – especially in a grumpy way as Rory does. He thunders around his castle and estate like a mad man and I couldn’t help but enjoy every minute.

“It was like the biggest, funniest and best extended epilogue you could imagine.”

I felt Zoe took a little bit of a back seat to Rory in this story – at least in terms of strong personalities – but she’s still a likeable character, much like in the first book. I loved how she was so calm and in control… until she found herself just as jealous as Rory had been. Then the gloves came off.

There’s a whole host of secondary characters and I felt that the just added to the enjoyable chaos. I liked who I was supposed to like, dislike who I was supposed to dislike, and am hoping for future pairings for several others. It never got confusing – in terms of who’s who, I mean – and each added something to the story. Maggie did turn into a wee bit more of a Scottish caricature than she was in the first book, but she was featured so infrequently that I just cringed and let it go.

As I mentioned, this was a bit of a sex fest, as Rory and Zoe are already a couple. For all that it was hot – it was also really sweet. It was like the biggest, funniest and best extended epilogue you could imagine.

And of course this book was funny. Hilarious, in fact. I snort-laughed, I gasped, I cheered – it was if I was reading the equivalent of a romantic panto. (Oh my god – let’s do romantic pantos!) This is what Evie Alexander was born to do – write of ridiculous scenarios that somehow make complete sense and make you hoot with laughter. And leave you with that satisfied feeling that tells of time well spent. Has to be 5 stars.

Evie Alexander is the author of sexy romantic comedies with a very British sense of humour. She takes a method approach to her work, believing her capacity to repeatedly fail at life and love is what has given her such a rich supply of material for her writing.

Her interests include reading, eating, saving the world, and fantasising about people who only exist between the pages of her books. She lives in the West country with her family.
