The perfect summer romance

This is my first time reading a Michelle Douglas book but one read of the blurb and I knew that I couldn’t pass it up. Grumpy bodyguard meets supposed society princess as they compete together on a house restoration show. And on a Greek island no less. Gimme!

We meet our main characters right off the bat and their characters are quickly established – along with the friction and attraction between them. I loved that there was obvious tension between Zach and Janie which gave a little bite to the obvious attraction.

Janie is the daughter of a music legend and an actress and has lived in their spotlight her whole life – even being dubbed Plain Jane by the press. It’s easy to see why Janie is no fan of fame and just wants to work, relax with her close friends and support her charities. She’s no time for love – and not just because she got screwed over rotten by her ex. And for all this – and so much more – Janie was an absolute delight and someone I really rooted for. She stood up for what she believed in and, when push came to shove, she stood up for herself, too. Bright, bubbly, kind and vulnerable – she was the perfect heroine.

And if Janie was our perfect heroine – Zach’s face is on the book boyfriend posters. He’s ex-army and has a rigid, stubborn mindset and walls so high you might not see daylight. He’s got trauma and his world is black and white – but he apologises when wrong and is a true hero at his heart. And as time goes on, he shows just how sweet and caring he can be. He attempted to hide and deny it (which I really loved) but he was so sweet to Janie and the way he fell for her was just so sigh-worthy.

“This is the perfect romance for those lazy summer days – or maybe even for the rainy ones…”

There’s a bit of a slow burn to this story. At first. Our couple are boss and employee, colleagues, reluctant friends – and then MORE! It just builds and builds with all the anticipation and teasing and then they transform into something more. And it’s wonderful. More sultry and seductive than out and out erotic – it felt perfect for the whole tone of the book and the story of Zack and Janie. A nice bit of sizzle in the Greek sun.

I loved that there was a little bit of an edge to the story what with the potential danger Janie might be in. It never got to the level of being called suspense, but it added a different dimension to the story. As did the whole renovation reality TV show they were participating in. It definitely added some drama to what was going on but it was dealt with in a way that even if you’re not into any kind of reality TV or renovation shows, you’ll still love the detail.

And I have to say that detail is what glowed this book right up. Ms Douglas writes the story of Zach and Janie falling in love in the most wonderful setting. She effortlessly transported them – and me – to the sultry, summer setting of Corfu. I saw the cerulean sea, felt the breeze, smelt the food and the heat. The wine, the meats, the cheeses – coupled with the lazy kisses – on the tiled terrace next to the sea. I could almost touch Greece it was so well described. As was the whole book – again so easy to read in a style that builds the world as you read.

This is the perfect romance for those lazy summer days – or maybe even for the rainy ones when you wish you were on a terrace on Corfu! It was absorbing, sweet and sexy, and ultimately made me smile and sigh in satisfaction. This might be the first Michelle Douglas I’ve read but it definitely won’t be the last. 5 stars.
