Review: My Favorite Boss by Melanie Moreland

My new boss—Alexander Bane
Aptly named since he’s the bane of my existence.
Please isn’t in his vocabulary.
He grunts, growls, and demands.
If only he didn’t look so sexy when doing so.
If only his mouth weren’t so addictive when kissing mine.
He’s quickly becoming my favorite boss.
Which is wrong.
My new assistant is an unwelcomed distraction.
Snarky, witty, always smiling.
Constantly putting me in my place.
Making me second-guess my decisions.
I dislike it. Intensely.
Unless I’m kissing her.
Then Magnolia Myers becomes my favorite person.
Which I hate.

Two people working together, disliking each other.
Until they don’t.
Then the fun begins.
HR has never been so entertained.

Sexy and hilarious office romance

What’s better than a brand new Melanie Moreland novel to get stuck into? And My Favorite Boss lives up to every expectation I had of it and then some. You may have seen or read My Favorite Kidnapper by the same author, but other than the name and styling, these two books aren’t linked in any way. This stands alone with a delightful happily ever after.

Alexander Bane – or Bane as he’s known – needs a new assistant. He wants someone to keep up with his exacting standards. Someone calm, quiet and when he says jump, they’ll ask how high. Basically the exact opposite of Magnolia Myers. Cute, feisty, sassy and unexpectedly sexy in her buttoned up, Victoriana outfits. Let the fun begin.

I love a story in any setting where one of our pair comes in and makes the other realise, just by being kind and caring, exactly what they’ve been missing in their lives. And that’s what we get here. Magnolia aka Maggie aka Myers might sometimes be a hot mess but she brings love, light and happiness into Bane’s world. As well as sandwiches and foamy coffee. She’s a really likeable character and it was so easy to root for her. She’s got her troubles but she’s a hard worker and does what she needs to do. But it’s just her kindness and touched my heart – and how she was with Bane.

Bane himself was exactly the right level of grumpy boss hole. Enough to make him realistically a nightmare to work for – but also actually just a squishy marshmallow under the right circumstances. I love how awed he was by Myers and how much fun and light she brought into his life – even if he massively resisted at first. He was another easy character to fall in love with and root for.

“I actually can’t wait to read this again and wallow in it’s wonderfulness once more.”

I was a little bit concerned about the power dynamic between Bane and Myers at first. I mean, he’s her boss after all – and a grumpy, demanding one at that. Thankfully, the longer they were together, both as a couple and not, there was a shift so the couple felt more on an even playing field.

This is a Melanie Moreland book so you know it’s going to be immaculately written and you’ll be hooked from the very first page. But it’s also hugely funny. I kept wondering if there would be a little bit of suspense thrown in for good measure – but other than my anxiety over whether our couple were finally going to be rumbled by HR – there was nothing.

If you’re a fan of Ms Moreland – you’re also going to know that there’s going to be plenty of heat between our couple. There’s the tension leading up to them finally giving in to their desires and then it’s still sizzling as our pair try to keep things under wraps in the office. To varying degrees of success.

This book entertained me from beginning to end and I find myself wishing I could still be in the office with Myers and Bane or in the house with Alex, Maggie and of course, little Hedgey. I actually can’t wait to read this again and wallow in it’s wonderfulness once more. Definitely 5 stars and adds another reason as to why Melanie Moreland is one of my favourite authors of all time.

* I received this book in exchange for my honest review

New York Times/USA Today bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-seven-plus years and their rescue cat, Amber. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.

While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys traveling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip.

Melanie loves stories, especially paired with a good wine, and enjoys skydiving (free falling over a fleck of dust) extreme snowboarding (falling down stairs) and piloting her own helicopter (tripping over her own feet.) She’s learned happily ever afters, even bumpy ones, are all in how you tell the story.
