Harlow James is destined to rock the dating world. The creator of Kissmet, the app helping singles find love, she’s in New York to secure advertisers. But the sassy, small-town girl can’t help meddling in other people’s business.
When she runs into a muscular stranger at her go-to food truck, Harlow doesn’t realize he’s Landon “Andy” Burke, the NFL’s most-wanted free agent, in town to talk contracts. She just sees a hottie about to get burned by undercooked street food. Though she tries to warn him, he shrugs her off, making a little wager instead.
In a messy twist of fate, Andy finds himself in the same hotel as Harlow. When she collects on their bet, they make a mind-blowing—and bed-rocking—connection. But after the weekend, she goes home to Green Bay to her goofy dad and corgi, ready to focus everything on work again. Kissmet, however, has other ideas, when Andy knocks on her door…

Fast, fun and quirky

I’m always game for a bit of Sara Ney’s quirky romances and this kicks off a new series (Not Yours) that I’m really excited for. In this first book, we have an opposites attract, hidden identity, sports romance between a prospective matchmaker and the most famous man in American Football.
Harlow and Andy’s meet cute is actually just Harlow berating Andy for choosing to eat chicken from a street vendor. A wager followed by a chance meeting and suddenly Andy and Harlow find themselves spending the day together and getting to know each other better. But Harlow lives half way across the country from Andy. And Andy – well, he’s kind of not who he says he is.
I loved Harlow from top to toe and she was so easy to root for from the very first. She sassy but only because she just can’t seem to help herself. Like when she’s telling Andy not to eat the chicken – it’s just because she needs to say something. But she’s equally a little bit hesitant which made her all the more likeable. She definitely likes Andy but the sensible part of her brain is telling her to pump the brakes. I think we’d all react like her if the situation arose – especially in wondering if Andy might actually be a serial killer.
Andy was a delight and I actually felt a little bit bad for him – despite him being a rich, famous and successful athlete. He meets Harlow and he suddenly realises that the relationships he’s had before in his life have all been lacklustre. It throws him for a loop and I loved to watch him flounder about his feelings and what to do. But he’s still a cocky so-and-so and his boyish charm just made my heart melt.
“…fantastic chemistry… and a fast and interesting storyline.”
There’s definitely a lot of chemistry between Harlow and Andy but it felt really true to life in that push and pull, does he like me?, does she want me?, kind of way. They were both a bit cagey to begin with and then they weren’t. The sex scenes were electric but it was actually in the texts, calls and chats where I really felt the relationship between our couple build. It was wonderful.
I’ll concede that Sara Ney’s style is very marmite. You’ll either love her quirky, chatty style – or be very confused by it. But if you’re like me, the banter, the talking to the reader, the stream of character consciousness, will delight you and really help you get to know – and love – her characters. The story itself isn’t dramatic and there’s minimal angst (yes, even though Andy’s keeping his identity a secret) – but it just works and I didn’t want to stop reading.
We get some great secondary characters in this story, too. Harlow’s besties were hilarious and Andy’s best mate, Dex, was hilariously refreshing. His story comes next and I am already here for it. Harlow’s Dad also featured some and I admit that those scenes left me feeling various degrees of sad, annoyed and uncomfortable. But not overly so.
I really enjoyed this book. It has great characters who have fantastic chemistry together and a fast and interesting storyline. I would have loved an epilogue further into the future but I’m just going to hope we get to see Harlow and Andy again when we get the next book in the series. But this first in the series gets 5 stars.
