A single dad, a model, and a comedian walk into a barā¦ Theyāre all Owen Brodie.
Itās only funny if you arenāt the hilarious struggling comedian who has been hired to be his sonās nanny for the stand-up tour.
Dear Ms. Hogan,
Iām emailing to offer you the job as my sonās nanny because Sam had a temper tantrum when I told him I canāt hire you to come on my stand-up tour with us. āShe heckled me at a club a few years ago,ā I wanted to say. āShe is the sassy little turd who trolls me on Twitter,ā I could have told him. āSheās an even bigger pain in the butt when weāre face-to-face,ā I thought to myself. What I would never tell him isāthings could get complicated. For reasons.
Let me know if you want the job.
With great reluctance,
Owen

Dear Mr. Brodie,
Thank you for your email. Please inform Sam that I like him very much and would love to be his nanny and accompany him on your terrible joke of a stand-up tour.
I can assure youāthings will not get complicated. For many, many reasons.
Primarily because Owen Brodie isnāt funny, and he can suck it.
Out of financial desperation and a fondness for your son,
Frankie

A snarky, sexy delight
I admit to being a bit of a fan-girl of Kayley Loring and yet with each new book she manages to dazzle and delight me just a little bit more. So I was champing at the bit to get my hands on Funny Business and it was well worth the wait.
The book is about Owen Brodie and Frankie Hogan and is the first in a new series about the Brodie brothers who are all introduced in this book. Also in the book are cameos from Shane, Nico and Alex, the heroes from Kayleyās previous Name in Lights series. But fear not – this book stands completely alone and features a (more than) satisfying HEA for Owen and Frankie.
When we first meet Frankie, oh boy is she a snarky wee thing; So deliciously sarcastic and antagonistic. I kept thinking that I really shouldnāt love her – but I adored every single thing about her. She didnāt lose her snark as time went on and as her relationship with Owen progressed – which is something I love in a book and with a couple. Stay yourself and someone will fall in love with all of you.
Owen wasnāt quite as snarky as Frankie but he still gave as good as he got – but adding in fart jokes, boy thoughts and general silliness. He was slightly arrogant but in a completely understandable (he was HOT!) and ridiculously adorable way. He was all-in with Frankie and he let her be himself while being completely himself, too. They were the perfect pair and by God – when he was sweet he went all out. Teeth aching perfection.
Together the pair were flammable. They were definitely an I want you now, throw you up against the wall and kiss the living daylights out of you kind of couple. They regularly gave me beautiful tummy flutters and, coupled with the sweetness as above, I was in romance novel heaven.
The story is fast moving and, it goes without saying, wonderfully well-written. The chapters are short and I found myself racing through this book, trying to carve out 5 minutes between work and chores just so I could read a little more of Owen, Frankie and even Sam. There wasnāt a ton of drama, and there wasnāt an obvious shoe waiting to drop, but I was hooked from the first and wanted more, more, more. I admit I feel a wee bit bereft now that Iām finished with the book and thereās no more Owen and Frankie to read about. So I will have to impatiently wait for the next book and hope they make cameos!
There are – wait for it – two epilogues in this book. Now you can see why Iām such a fool for Kayley Loring as she knows what I want! And thatās before I even read the epilogues because Oh. My. God – they were everything and more. I may just have clutched my pearls and swooned.
This is a book that is chock full of everything. Itās snarky, hella sexy and oh so funny. I enjoyed every second of it and would happily recommend it. One of my favourites this year and definitely worth 5 stars.
*I received this book in exchange for my honest review.*
Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got her BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasnāt allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now sheās breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. Itās an adjustment that sheās happily getting used to.
