Review: Finally You by Claudia Burgoa

Sometimes what you’re looking for is right where you left it.

Every summer Mane Cantú came to Luna Harbor to visit his grandfather.

When we were teenagers we fell in love.

We promised to be each other’s forever.

He promised to come back for me.

Spoiler alert: he broke all of the promises.

I grew up, but that big heartbreak was it for me. I built a successful lavender farm and a shop and that’s now my only priority.

All is well until Mane’s grandfather falls ill and all the Cantú family comes back to Luna Harbor. For good.

What’s worse is that Mane’s now famous. Like, real-life famous, not Luna Harbor famous. He made a name for himself with his band and he and his perfect face dare to open a bar next to my store with his bandmates.

Well, he may have started the war, but I plan to finish it.

Except now we’re seeing each other everywhere, and I’m starting to remember the way we used to be.

Still, I’m sticking to my guns. I’m not falling for the prodigal son.

Until one kiss changes everything.

I was lost and confused

2 stars

I am a huge fan of Claudia Burgoa’s romcoms – the Against All Odds series being a particular favourite of mine. When I saw a new series being started once again promising the laughs, swoons and a second chance with your first love who just happens to now be a billionaire – I was all in.

The first scene / chapter was brutal. Emotionally so. While not being what I was expecting, I went with it. As a result of this, I was immediately drawn to our heroine, Nydia. She had A LOT going on but the way she dealt with things was very admirable and I liked her strength and how she was always smiling and doing things for others.

And then we met our hero Mane. And his band and managers and, well, a whole load of other people. I had absolutely zero clue who these people were. I actually stopped reading to go and check that I hadn’t stumbled into a book in the middle of a series… but no – this is the first book in a new series called Luna Harbour. I’ve just read another reviewer state that this is a spin off of Burgoa’s Baker’s Creek Billionaire Brothers series which explains why I was confused. Technically, I suppose that the main love story between Nydia and Mane stands alone but having not read any of the Baker’s Creek Billionaires, I was well and truly lost. Just lots of inside jokes, confusing statements, random people and unlikeable people that the author really thought the reader should like (which can only mean we were supposed to have fallen in love with their ‘quirks’ in an earlier story).

“…I was completely disconnected with our main characters and their relationship.”

It’s not a surprise, then, that I was completely disconnected with our main characters and their relationship. I didn’t feel, well, anything for them, so it’s very hard to believe in them or feel any kind of connection between them.

Apart from that, I feel that labelling this as a romcom is wildly inaccurate. That’s neither a good thing or a bad thing – but I do think it contributed to my ultimate feelings towards this book. If there had been some laughs thrown in (that weren’t the inside jokes as above) then I might have started to feel more favourably about things as I read on and started to understand more. There’s also the fact that there are a very large amount of things in this book that are quite upsetting – regardless of your personal triggers. It just wasn’t a feel-good read what with all the real-life melodrama included.

It’s obvious that this book was just not for me. I think that most of that stemmed from the fact that I came into this book completely blind. Had I read and enjoyed Ms Burgoa’s Baker Street Billionaire series then I fully expect that this review would have been completely different. So while I can only give this book 2 stars, if you’re loving those Baker Street Billionaires then this spin-off series could be your perfect read. Depending on your triggers, I mean!
