Great start to a new family series

5 stars

This is the start of a new series for Carly Phillips as the Sterling Family take the spotlight. This book stands completely alone but we do have a little bit of Dare crossover for those who’ve read Ms Phillips previous books. Our hero, Remy, is the business partner of Zach Dare who we met in Just One Tease.

Our couple have been working together for some time at the start of the book and there’s already a relationship between the two. Even if it’s just as colleagues. But our hero, Remy, definitely wants there to be more between them. While Raven does feel the same, her past – that may well become her present – means she’s reluctant to get close to anyone.

Remy is the classic Carly Phillip’s hero that I love to read about. He’s in charge, alpha, protective and since he falls first in this story, he’s determined to convince Raven that they can be together and are perfect for each other. He did stray a little bit too close to telling Raven what to do on one occasion, but other than that, I loved him and wanted him to win Raven over.

Our heroine, Raven, is a strong and determined woman that has had a bit of a difficult past that is threatening to rear its ugly head once again. It’s perfectly understandable why she tries to keep everyone at arm’s length. But it’s equally understandable how Remy manages to break down her walls. She was a likeable character and I always enjoy it when a character who’s had to be on guard, finally finds her people and her place.

“It’s that big family energy and love that Carly Phillips writes so well and makes you want to be a part of…”

As Remy and Raven both know each other at the start of the story, it’s mere pages before they first get together. But they’ve already got some established chemistry so it feels right. That kicks off some supposed ‘friends with benefits’ arrangement that’s definitely more than that. It’s all the sexy goodness that you would expect from Ms Phillips and it really showed the development of Remy and Raven’s relationship.

As an aside – is it just me that really struggles when characters have the same first initial of their names? It wasn’t too bad in this story but it’s something that I really have an issue with.

There is a suspense element to this story but it’s nothing too dark or disturbing. I mean, the situation isn’t pleasant but it’s written in a way that adds a little drama and suspense to the story but doesn’t gratuitously terrorise. It’s wrapped up neatly and satisfactorily and I was happy.

This is the first book in the new Sterling Family series, as I said, and we’re introduced to various different family members that I’m hoping all get their own stories. I really fell into Remy and Raven’s romance and loved them as a couple. But it was also about the world that was starting to be built around them. It’s that big family energy and love that Carly Phillips writes so well and makes you want to be a part of. I really enjoyed this first offering and can’t wait to read more. Definitely recommend. 5 stars.
