Review: Unscripted with Mila by Melanie Moreland

Mila Morrison prefers the silent company of her keyboard to that of people. She lives vicariously through the characters she creates.

Nicholas Scott only feels comfortable when he’s playing the role of someone else. He would rather be anyone but himself.

Both of them are hiding, too afraid to let anyone in.

Their attraction is unscripted, as is the bond that forms between them.

When the world around them threatens to tear them apart, are they strong enough to make the final scene?

Or will their affair end up on the cutting room floor?

Going out on a high

5 stars

This was a book that I was really looking forward to read. Mila seemed like she was a shy, introvert and I adored the idea that she would find her happily ever after with a huge Hollywood superstar actor. We very briefly met Mila in the previous book in the series, Sunshine and Sammy, but the romance in this book completely stands alone. Buuuuut, the series that this book is from, Vested Interest: ABC Corp Series, is a spin-off from the Vested Interest series which is also tied to The Contract books. And Mila is the daughter of one of the couples from one of those books, Van and Liv. So there are a whole host of other characters that pop up in this story. You definitely don’t need to have read all the other books, but you’ll get more enjoyment from the group scenes if you have.

Mila Morrison is a shy, quiet and introverted women who likes to live vicariously through the characters in her best-selling novels. When one of her books is optioned into a film, she pushes hard for troubled actor Nick Scott to take the lead role. She feels a connection to him though they’ve never met, which only solidifies when they meet in person. I love how Mila had layers to her personality and that she glowed with Nick rather than changing into a different person. It was like she was Mila 2.0 when around him. Sure she was quiet, but she was fierce, loyal, kind and calm. I loved her to bits.

I will warn you right now that you will fall hard and fast for Nicholas Scott – just like Mila does. He’s got a reputation and plenty of rumours going round about him. But the truth is something few people know. I’m a sucker for a strong man that’s in need of the love of a good woman and Nick was so in need of love. And yet, he’s still a grumpy, alpha man who knows what he wants and is determined to get it. And I’m not just talking about the coffee he loves to demand!

There is a connection between Mila and Nick that we readers feel just as keenly as our couple do. It’s a need to be with each other and to gain comfort from the other. But it’s that way of being the best version of themselves when they are with the other, and only feel like they are their true selves when with each other. Gets me every time. Alongside the deep connection we also get some fantastic chemistry. This couple are hot! Pool clinches, picnic trysts and push me up against the wall kisses all culminate in some sexy times with our couple. It’s good stuff.

“I loved every page and every word. Ms Moreland’s writing is, as always, spectacular.”

Nick’s mental health is a feature of this story but it’s never written as if it’s a plot point but rather is woven into Nick’s character and the book as a whole. I’m very particular about how mental health is portrayed and am quick to be critical if it’s not done well, as it shouldn’t be a source of entertainment for people. I have absolutely no complaints about this book and I thought it was great how it was dealt with and how it may help readers to deal with similar situations in real life.

This is not a high-angst story but instead, as Melanie Moreland is famous for, a real story about real love that we want to believe could happen to us. The women love their men hard and the men adore them right back. It’s just how they get to their happily ever after that makes for such an entertaining tale. This book was super cute, sigh-worthy and made me want to cheer. I loved every page and every word. Ms Moreland’s writing is, as always, spectacular.

I have a horrible feeling, based on the epilogue we get with this book, that this might be the end of the whole Vested Interest and BAM series. That epilogue gives us a glimpse into all the previous book characters, where they are now, where their children and grandchildren are now. And gives us insight into the people who didn’t get their own books. It’s like a lovely overview of everyone – but it definitely screamed goodbye! Dabs eyes However, if this is the end, we had such an amazing run of stories with characters that will stay with me for a long time. And we definitely went out on a high with Mila and Nick. 5 stars without a doubt.

New York Times/USA Today bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-seven-plus years and their rescue cat, Amber. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.

While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys traveling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip.

Melanie loves stories, especially paired with a good wine, and enjoys skydiving (free falling over a fleck of dust) extreme snowboarding (falling down stairs) and piloting her own helicopter (tripping over her own feet.) She’s learned happily ever afters, even bumpy ones, are all in how you tell the story.
