Review: My Year with the Billionaire by Rachael Stewart

Can spending a year with the infamous billionaire be enough to tempt Summer back into his arms?

My twelve months of sacrifice…
…or temptation?

My foster mother’s will states I, Summer, must live with her grandson, infamous billionaire Edward Fitzroy, for one year on her Scottish estate or we forfeit our inheritance!

Years ago, scared of our intense connection, I left without saying goodbye…

Now I’m completely unprepared for how devastatingly attractive Edward’s become—and how he still makes me feel.

We’re from different worlds. Surely this can’t work! But it’s oh so tempting to give in to the sparks flying between us…

A warm and cosy, heartwarming read

5 stars

I’ve not read a book that has really resonated with me for a while, but I had high hopes for this book because 1) Rachael Stewart and 2) that cover is so deliciously autumnal it’s like a cosy hug just waiting to be read. And I am so happy to say that this book was everything I hoped it would be – and then some.

Our story starts off in rainy Edinburgh and at the time I was reading, it was just as cold and miserable as the book would suggest. So extra points for authenticity! In fact, the whole story takes place in Scotland either in Edinburgh or at the fictitious estate of Glenrobin further north. But fear not, there are no ‘hoots mon’ or ‘och aye the noos’ to be found within.

We first meet our couple in a flashback to 20 years ago when they first meet each other – and I fell in love with Edward immediately. I’m always in awe of authors who can craft a hero that is vulnerable and yet still has the strength and virility of an alpha man. In the present, he’s angry and aloof – but he’s still got that soft spot for Summer that made my heart jump and butterflies explode in my stomach. It was heavenly.

Our heroine, Summer, is a former foster child who is a bit of a wild child and a lot of a free spirit. I’m always worried about having a heroine that is so different to myself – in the question of ‘are you a Summer – or are you an Edward?’ – I’m 100% an Edward. But it really didn’t take me long to realise that Summer was more like me than I expected – and more than that, someone that I could really admire and root for. She still felt a little broken inside but never came across as a whiner or too down on herself.

“…your heart will definitely be warmer by the time you’re through.”

As much as I liked Edward and Summer individually, it’s together where they really come alive. They are so perfect for each other that I felt a real chemistry whenever they were on the page together. Fighting or loving – these two were the kind of couple you wanted to smoosh together to get them to get figure things out already. And that’s at the same time as enjoying every minute of their journey towards happily ever after. There’s a sexy scene as Summer and Edward reconnect but after that it’s closed doors. While I’m always one for more sex in my books – and would have liked more here, too – I still felt every tingle and shiver of chemistry between our pair so it didn’t detract from my enjoyment.

I make no secret of my utter adoration of Rachael Stewart’s writing style and the way she builds the worlds around her story. I lived in Glenrobin during my time with this book and I was so invested with our couple and their lives. I found myself having a deep emotional connection with the story – especially the parts that dealt with the death of Edward’s gran or those that dealt with Summer’s experiences of care and of feeling unloved. The scenes with Ted – her threadbare teddy she’d had as childhood? Those nearly broke me. Who knew threadbare stuffed animals were a trigger for me?

I said at the start that the cover of this book was like a warm, autumnal hug. Well, the book as a whole was just an extension of that. Our main scenes take place deep into autumn and then into winter and you get a warm feeling from reading it like you’re in front of a fire with a steaming hot cup of tea. There’s something so gratifying and satisfying about a Mills & Boon as the weather turns cold. And even if you’re cold as you read it – your heart will definitely be warmer by the time you’re through. Another fantastic story from Rachael Stewart and a well-deserved 5 star read.

*I received this book in exchange for my honest review.*

Rachael Stewart adores conjuring up stories for the readers of Harlequin Mills & Boon and Deep Desires Press, with tales varying from the heartwarmingly romantic to the wildly erotic.

She’s been writing since she could put pen to paper as the stacks of scrawled on A4 sheets in her loft will attest to, and the lovingly bound short stories that her father would run off at work and proudly share out with his colleagues. Thinking it was a pipe dream to be published one day, she pursued a sensible career in business but she was really play-acting, achieving the appropriate degree and spending many years in the corporate world where she never truly belonged. Always happiest when she was sat at her laptop in the quiet hours tapping out a story or two. And so here she is, a published author, her full-time pleasure, a dream come true.

A Welsh lass at heart, she now lives in Yorkshire with her husband and three children, and if she’s not glued to her laptop, she’s wrapped up in them or enjoying the great outdoors seeking out inspiration.
